obama_cadillac_limoObama’s limousine nicknamed “The Beast” is a state of the art piece of machinery designed in accordance with the safety specifications laid down by the federal government. The protection level offered by the custom made Cadillac limo is almost equivalent to that of a military tanker. The safety features offered by the car include bullet proof glass and an armoured body strong enough to withstand a rocket propelled grenade. The door armour is said to be 8 inches thick and the glass is 5 inches thick. It also has a Kevlar sheet woven on its base to protect it in case of blasts. It also has a separate oxygen supply and a completely sealed interior to protect the President against a chemical attack. Its tyres are designed so that it can keep moving even if bullets are shot at the tyre. General Motors has not officially released to specs and features of the car to maintain secrecy. All the Presidential Limousines are kept in the Henry Ford Museum. This practice has stopped now and the Secret Service sees to it that the limos are destroyed upon retirement of the president to keep its secrets. “The Beast” is presently the most technologically advanced protection vehicle in the world.

The steering wheel in a formula one car is one of the most complex parts of the car. The steering wheel has evolved over time and allows the driver to adjust and tune almost every aspect of the car while driving. Except the throttle and the brake, all other controls are on the steering wheel. After the introduction of the semi-automatic gear changes in formula one, came the paddles for shifting gears. They also contain controls for selecting neutral gear, car to pit communication, a button for releasing liquid through a tube in the helmet for the driver to replenish his fluid levels, adjusting traction control, regulating engine performance and regulating pit lane speed.

Even the front-to-rear brake bias and fuel mixture can be altered to allow the driver to adjust to changing race conditions. Among the most recent additions to the steering wheel are the boost button and controls for the moveable front wing. The steering also has lights indicating the perfect time for optimum gear shift. The steering is designed to concentrate controls as close to the driver’s fingers as possible. The steering can be clipped on and it is removed when the driver gets in or gets off the car.

A formula one pit stop

10 05 2009

pitstop

The pit stop is one of the most crucial areas on which a formula one team concentrates upon. Making a pit stop at the correct moment and the time taken at the pits could determine the difference between winning and losing in formula one. Once the strategists decide when to bring the car into the pits depending on the remaining fuel in the car and the number of laps left, the race engineer of the team alerts the driver the preceding lap and the pit crew gets ready. The driver also informs the pit crew if any changes made to be made to the setting of the car if it is not handling as the driver wants it to. The fuel rig is then programmed to deliver the precise amount of fuel required. The pit crew practice the pit stop routine several times before the race and each member of the team has one specific job to be done. The fuel rig delivers fuel at about 12 liters per second which is incredibly fast when compared to a normal gas stations. In the mean time the tires are replaced. It takes hardly 3.5 seconds to change all the tires on the car by the pit crew. Once the fuel rig is pulled out the lollipop man alerts the driver to get ready to start. A typical pit stop usually lasts for 7 seconds and could mean the difference between winning and losing for a team.
